I'm talking about the long term perspective of debt. For any given politician, NOW is always the right time to spend, and the future is always the right time to pay it down. In a sane world, deficits are run during recessions, and surpluses are used to pay down debt in the peak years of the cycle. That is what Clinton started to do at the end of his 2'nd term, and then Bush the Idiot came in and threw a wrench into the gears. Now we have Trump the Idiot who will follow those footsteps...
