Rep. Connie Morella, R-Md., said the date-recognition problem could affect everything from Social Security benefits to air traffic control systems. Private businesses could face a similar dilemma.

''The Congress has stepped up to the plate by raising awareness about the problem and by pushing federal agencies, state and local governments and private industry toward immediate, corrective measures,'' Morella said in the Republicans' weekly radio address.

''But the administration is dropping the ball,'' she said.

Good for her! I just heard the tail end of this on NPR this morning.

And for a bit of history... Senator Daniel P. Moynihan risked personal political capital by writing directly to Clinton on Y2K long ago (perhaps late '96). Clinton did not even have the personal courage to reply directly but rather directed a reply thru a low-level functionary in OMB (hardly the way to treat one of the most senior senators on the Hill!).

Moynihan did get a personal meeting with the Treasury secretary who, at the time was unaware of Y2K.

If any of you lurkers are so inclined, it might be a good idea to goose your duely elected & tell them to get off their duffs.
