I am guessing you used #2 or #4shot? A lot of work pulling feathers and guts etc. I have an old friend who rode the rails in the 30s between the age of 14 and 16. He said he learned a trick for other "hobos" (his term) in cooking chickens and turkeys without an oven. He said you make a ball of mud around the bird feathers and all and place it in the fire. After a while the mud hardens like almost like pottery. You take it out of the fire and as you break the hardened mud and pull it off the feathers come out with the hard mud and the guts drop out. He said he taught other soldiers how to do it with chickens in Germany during WW2.
