...my router allows MAC filtering so that only devices specifically listed can connect to wifi.
MAC address filtering will prevent your visiting buddy from connecting his smartphone, but it won't deter someone who knows the slightest thing about wireless hacking. Do not depend on the MAC filter as a security measure. Use a strong WPA2 key.
