You, being such an intellectual and all, might need to explain the above remark. Because when I look at it, that group of people have created the most regulated, un-free environment that children of that era could possibly have expected. That is NOT existentialist.
We can do whatever we like as long as we buy health insurance. If I choose not to pay Social Security taxes -- purportedly for my benefit, but in reality, for the benefit of others who have beaten me to it -- then my property can be taken hostage by the government. People still go to prison for marijuana possession when a clearly majority don't want that.
There is no existentialism in this country. Not in any pure sense of the word.
San Francisco was a moment in time which is now subsumed with $5000 apartment rent an an obscession with making vast sums of money -- necessary, for paying vast sums of taxes and living with insane government mandates and the interest on even more insane levels of debt. Those former existentialists now ready to retire on pensions that for many, aren't going to be able to make ends meet.
So, what does "existentialism" mean to you? Because it certainly isn't the usual definition. |
