PX, here's what a reliable source told me about the limits of areal
density...(paraphrased)

The theoretical limit is in the 40-100 Gb/in2 range.
This is based on needing about 1000 particles
per transition for adequate SNR. The 10 Gb/in2 demo
was done with a total magnetic spacing of about 100 Angstroms.
Some people are working on methods to get around this.[the 1000
particle limit]. One method is to use patterned media with one particle per bit.

So it looks like we'll be OK for a few years.
The above subject is over my head, so I am
not able to discuss it.
