HOUSTON, Sept. 27 /PRNewswire/ -- Nutrition For Life International, Inc. (Nasdaq/NMS: NFLI) announced that it has been awarded a default judgment in its suit against Greg J. Caton for libel, slander, defamation and breach of contract. The basis of the complaint revolves around statements made by Caton on the Internet and elsewhere. Actual and punitive damages and other relief are yet to be decided.

In a similar suit against Caton, Kevin Trudeau, a major independent distributor of the Company, was recently awarded damages of $10 million. In a significant move, the court also ordered that Caton and any other individual or entity acting on behalf of or in concert with Caton are permanently enjoined from publishing any of the numerous statements alleged to be defamatory in the Complaint. Anyone who knowingly assists Caton in making statements proven to be defamatory could be liable for damages. Among statements Caton is restrained from making are statements referring to Trudeau's and Nutrition For Life International, Inc.'s advertising campaign as fraudulent and deceptive.

David J. Bradford of Jenner & Block, acting as counsel for Trudeau in this matter, commented that it is unusual for a court to issue an order restraining speech. "This is an extraordinary remedy that courts are generally reluctant to give," he stated. "It can be done because defamatory speech is false and lacks any social value. I also believe that this may be one of the first decisions restraining an individual from making statements published on the Internet."

Caton, a former major shareholder of a predecessor of Nutrition For Life International, Inc., disassociated with that firm in 1987. Since his departure and sale of his stock, he has embarked on a bitter campaign to discredit and harm Nutrition For Life International and persons involved with the Company.

In 1990 Caton was convicted of a felony conspiracy to counterfeit money in the United States District Court in Lake Charles, Louisiana.

Nutrition For Life International, Inc. develops, markets and sells an extensive product line of nutritional supplements and other consumer products through its network of over 85,000 independent distributors. Currently the Company markets its products in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, Guam, Canada, the United Kingdom, Korea and the Philippines.
