MSB, I see you are doing your patriotic duty to die sooner, by continuing to smoke. Contrary to the popular statistics, my understanding of this issue is that although you will have increased Medicare expenses for your extremely sad and untimely death, you won't tap much of your Social Security pension. Thank you for being a generous American!!!!!!!

If you really want to quit, I highly recommend nicotine patches. They really kill the cravings for such a long time that by the end of it, the smell and taste of cigarettes are repulsive, and no desire to smoke is left. However, this is San Francisco, and we all smoke outside, even in the rain, and nonsmokers have begun to complain about outdoor smoking as well, which is understandable in a way, because it is noxious to be at a busstop or walking along and smell yucky smoke. I am not sure it would be quite so easy to quit in an environment which is more hospitable to smokers, as I understand it still is in your neck of the woods. It is really hard not to smoke when many people around you are lighting up all day and all night!! Now all the bars and clubs in California are also totally nonsmoking, unless you are in a sealed room where no employees ever have to go. Some ingenious bar owners are building microphone/conveyor systems to deliver drinks without any human contact.

I think New Year's resolutions are pretty much usually doomed to failure. I know this, because I make the same ones every year!!!! Did you make some?
