Sorry if you took my comment as a slight but I often think that this thread focuses more on hardware and it's technical aspects than it does on hardware and it's capabilites and limitations.

As a programmer, please elucidate the programs you are limited in writing because of lack of hardware power.

What kinds of programs are current pc's constraining?

What programming becomes unconstrained and more feasible with the announced and upcoming PII 's and Merced?

What programming will become unconstrained when the next generation of chips arrives in another 18 months?

I await your programming insight.
