The Mayo Clinic network is a Canadian Medicare provider. It's one of the exceptional features of Canadian Medicare.

"Mayo Clinic requires written authorization from government entities sponsoring patient care. To facilitate the most expedient care, authorization must be received prior to patient arrival. The international appointment offices are available to assist with questions. If coverage is restricted, Mayo Clinic may require payment prior to unauthorized services, or the patient may receive a bill for services not covered by the sponsor. The sponsor can clarify what services are covered." - mayoclinic.org

Would your insurer pay for your treatment in Paris, France if a Hospital there had the best healthcare for your rare disease? No.

My Aunt and Uncle, in their late 70s, live in Carmel California and they're covered by American Medicare. They both fly to the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville Florida for check-ups. It makes no sense to me, but it's what they do.

I asked him why they didn't go to the Mayo Clinic in Phoenix and he told me, "Because there's no beach there."

Maybe they have retired friends in Florida they visit.
