The science of sociology says you're wrong about income inequality as far as the health of a society goes. I can link you to recent books that have been written on it. Recently Joseph Stiglitz, the number one referenced economist in the world, and noble prize winner, wrote an entire book on the damage inequality does to a society.
But as a person of conscience, I would think you would have concerns about a deep divide between rich and poor, especially inasmuch as close to half this nation is living near the poverty level. In a rich country like this we simply shouldn't have the pervasive poverty that we do.
Down below I have just posted, the world rankings for education. Singapore is number one in pretty much everything. And they have very little income inequality and if you read the article I posted, and I hope that you do because it's a worthwhile article if you are a person who is capable of changing their mind when presented with facts.
Singapore is number one, Japan is number two, South Korea's is seventh. If you look at the countries, they are all vibrant democracies with very little income inequality, with the exception of China ,which is 6th, but puts the country size debate to rest :)>- and very large central governments. Every single one has a larger government than we do. And yet the right wing wants to cut our programs even further.
We rank 39th in math, so far down educationally and intellectually, because for 50 years the Republicans, who are basically anti-intellectual, have been suffocating our educational system.
In the 1970s I believe, the Democrats passed free preschool for every kid in the country. Nixon vetoed that, because the right wing did not want schools teaching their children things like evolution and that the earth was 5 billion years old. The large religious section of the Republican Party has many people who believe the earth is only 6000 years old. As preposterous as that is.
