I get an uncomfortable feeling that Quantum may actually be showing some production restraint (cutting back on a build plan they could clearly achieve to avoid adding to channel inventories and cutting back on the high end drives which would presumably have at least a small positve gross margin). On the other hand, I haven't heard of IBM smoking the peace pipe and Seagate is wearing war paint-no talk of restraint and various comments about price wars, how the industry has not channged, and two quarters of significant growth in desktop volumes. As for WDC, their volume reductions hardly seem voluntary. And Maxtor ramping like mad surely offsets any amount of restraint Quantum may be undertaking. Would be interested in others thoughts on this subject.
