I think it could have been more widely accepted if we called it something else....a compromise...

I argued hereabouts off and on for years that the state should not be in the marriage business. Marriage is a partnership contract. It is that for everyone. For some it is also a sacrament. For the sacrament folks, it is upsetting to call a couple not eligible for the sacrament married. I always thought it would have been better to award the word to the sacrament and come up with a different word for those with civil marriages. But, that would have been distressing, too, to all those who were married in Vegas and it didn't work out that way.
