might be what I posted earlier

I got my Vista going with this:

wu.krelay.de

set control panel for never check for updates, reboot

install updates listed on website for your system, reboot

manually run windows update

Mine came back within 15 minutes listing what updates are available for december

depending on when your last update run, you may have to go back and repeat process for each month you missed using their previous pages listing necessary patches
