Phillip,

Apple is ALREADY in a strategic alignment with IBM.

Rhapsody is already ported to Intel chips.

The only drawback I can see to a merger or take over would be if the new company declines to support Merced, which would be like shooting yourself in the foot to teach yourself how to dance.

The advantages would be:
1) Credibility, WinTel people might think Apple is going away, but no one thinks IBM is going away.

2) Integration between various types of client/server would be enhanced. VMS? RS-6000? UNIX? NT?
AS-400?

3) IBMs sales forces are already having lunch with their clients, selling Rhapsody in addition would be easier for them. "See how much easier it is to implement Rhapsody, and you can use any of you existing boxes!" "No more headaches!" "Here, take this Gistics report with you." "Care for another RamosFizz?"

For what its worth, I doubt it will happen. These rumors have circulated before. Egos seem to thwart common business sense. I suspect that 98% of what the big boys do has to do with egos and who snapped them with a towel in the shower room after gym class.
