the issue is that with small cells, as you increase density, the intercell interference and hte inter user interference get to be more than you can stand. 5G is a super combination of beam forming, multiple user interference mitigation, and precise channel assignments. It also merges the wifi standards into the LTE standards so that the two can also mix.

I see it as a necessary evolution, however, the cost of processing per asestation has to get about 100x cheaper to do this. This is why they are proposing to bring the processing for the BTS back into the switch/basestation controller so that the processing can be shared. While this allows high er frequency over the air, it will mean alot more backhaul to handle the real time control and data information.
