There is some sameness and some difference.

You compared Religious belief to scientific understanding, which is the wrong comparison. Religious belief and scientific belief involve the same patterns of human emotion and brain circuitry. Religious understanding, however, is obviously different than Scientific understanding. Most Religious people see it quite realistic to have a religious understanding that coexists with their understanding of science. There are a few fundamentalists that break from that but they are on the exceptional fringe. Atheists like to view those fringe fundamentalists as representative of the whole religious body for some reason. That tendency is true of most groups, maybe it feels validating but I don't really know why groups do that to each other.
