the Bill of Rights is precious and has to be taken more literally (unfortunately, the courts have eaten away at it for decades).

Interesting. It has always seemed to me that the courts have provided the best protection for the Bill of Rights while the legislatures, catering to the majority, have been indifferent to the rights of others and the constitution, itself. Surveys have indicated that most people don't care about basic rights. They just want done what they want done and they want it done now.

What have the courts eaten?
