Nobody knows who owned it. Could have been a runaway. Could have been dumped in the area. They're near the edge of a development ... can see cows grazing out their window. An area where people might dump an unwanted animal.

It broke through a wood fence and bit the head off a Chihuahua that was in the back yard at the time. They have another dog - German shepherd/lab mix, female, big dog, very protective toward family. A good dog. It went crazy wanting outside. They didn't know why yet and pushed the door open to let it out. Their dog and the pitbull began fighting - the pit clamped down on one of their dog's front paws and their dog had the pit's head in her jaws. It would have been a fight to the death of one of them but my sil opened the door and clubbed the pit with his shotgun to get it to let go and pulled their dog in the house.

When constables showed up, they declined to do anything but told him he "could take care of it himself." So he shot and killed it. The pit wasn't going anywhere, was still there when the constables showed up and left. They had two daughters, one not yet in school yet at the time. How can you live not letting your kids go in their own backyard? What if the thing decides it can get through a window? It had gone through a wooden fence already to get at something and had shown it was a danger.

This shows you may not just need to defend yourself against two legged intruders.
