THEY have enlisted right-wingnut billionaires they sell the country to to buy a lot of mostly rural states for them, right before the census and redistricting. WE weren't paying attention, and had no plan to counter their plan. WE still don't, and the same people run the (D) party that allowed this to happen. Our hope now rests in how badly THEY screw up, and if WE can prevent THEM from shifting the blame to US. In 2018, WE have many more congressional seats to defend than THEY do. THEY need to screw up before then.
