Big map below. It appears nat-gas was correcting until this forecast came out. The models are building ridges (in red) over Alaska and south of Greenland. This blocks airflow and directs it into the continents, which is obviously cold for this time of year.

No polar vortex pattern here, just cold weather pattern. The stratospheric polar vortex is strong and cold. It needs to warm to have the "polar vortex" pattern over U.S.

There is an expected big solar flare Jan 6. From this day through the end of January, the media will talk about the "glacier" building over the NE U.S.

A lot of variability will occur out west with ridge forming and breaking down. This will happen as long as the "polar vortex" pattern isn't expressed.
