I hope every reasonable person can recognize the ridiculous we've witnessed since Trump came on board. I have my own theory as to why half the voters have chosen to tolerate it. I suspect it is a reaction to modern socialized taboo.

Language and thoughts have been socialized as taboo and many are uncomfortable with that. Some (mostly on the right) have long questioned whether politically correct policing is a positive contribution to society. Many consider it nose thumbing at best or a hindrance, even punitive discourse directed at conservative culture. Much of Trump ridiculousness seems riposte, not that it is justified morally. Like most jokes, taking things to a ridiculous level releases stress for the target audience (the half).
