There is something really comforting about conforming, PC, whatever you call it. I started smoking because of it in the 6th grade. I used LSD with some frequency in my high-school years, certainly seeking conformity to begin with. But in the end, I learned how to be the best in my graduate school classes because of it (I was just trying to make sure I "kept up").

It can really be problem, but it is also an organizing force at times.
