I agree with a lot of your post.

I have (maybe had) a friend of many years who was a newspaper reporter of some repute with a national following. While he was working I had no sense ever of his political leaning. But after retirement he revealed himself as what I would consider to be extreme left leaning.

Of course, with the advent of a Facebook, I became cognizant of his many friendships with other news reporters. The commentary I saw on his Facebook page this election season astounded me, not only his but that of other newsmen and women. And it was reflective of your comments -- we have to do what we have to do. Of course, they are mostly retirees, too, so I see it as okay but informative.

But I do believe that reporters who are working as reporters should not allow themselves that prerogative. And to a great extent that accounts for Trump's attraction to twitter. He controls the message. It wasn't necessary for Obama since they are loathe to criticize him to begin with.

I think the collapse of media objectivity is a far greater threat than Trump, any day of the week. Trump may be too pro-America, but I see that as harmless. I firmly believe that a free and independent media is the backbone of any democracy but I question its effectiveness when there is insufficient political diversity. Twitter may make him a joke, but no one thought it was a joke when Iranians ere communicating the uprising to the world in the absence of media presence.
