Maybe I was confused about (a) and (b). At any rate, I think "an SI..." sounds better. I agree the hiatus or glottal stop isn't pretty. Did you study German? You have to use those stops and sort of cough out the separate vowels ("in / einem / alten / offen"), whereas the French would slide them all together.
