Two more things I want to say comparing the South Korean film industry to Hollywood. And I would guess the South Korean film industry is starting to rival Hollywood. I hear that their cinema is very popular in Asia. But South Korea has built on Hollywood. They're very aware of America's culture and cinema. And music?

It's sort of interesting that if you go to South America and Mexico you don't get that much American music, or most countries. But South Korea weaves American and European music, including lots of classical music and films right in with their own. I'm sure that's what part of the attraction is, familiarity with content.

Anyway, the most important thing is that Hollywood has simply learned that they can make a fortune with car chases, and all sorts of fighting and visual effects to the point where they often times just omit a decent story altogether. It looks like they just patch something together that they figure will sell. And pay little attention to detail.

So many of their films really have no good story. I think Batman versus Superman made close to $1 billion which is nuts in my opinion. Their films are so commercial for the most part. Recipe films.

Hollywood is shallow. In South Korea, films have substance in and around them because that is part of their culture I believe. But I also think that their acting is so much better because they're more comfortable with intimacy and performing, so they have practice and that's reflected in their easy ability to create personalities and large numbers of good actors i.e. they know the terrain. I would bet for every good Hollywood actor South Korea has 10.

So the most important thing is simply that their films have more substance. But the second most important thing in my opinion is that where as Hollywood bills and sells films around an actor or actress, more or less; in South Korea they use the actors and actresses to support the story.

I know it's not everyone's cup of tea, but I just found it interesting for myself that I'm so attracted to the Asian films and so repulsed by Hollywood?
