Koan, nice to hear from you. (And just to warn you, I have found that the longer the post I make here, the less likely I am to get a response. It doesn't mean they don't get read; I guess people perceive that a long post requires a long response, so don't reply at all.)

I will differ from you with respect to Korean cinema. There certainly are some Korean directors I like, e.g. Kim Il-duk who is always interesting even when the movie fails to work, but the vast majority of Korean movies are commercial shlock, particularly their most 'successful' genre which is soft core porn, which they shovel out by the bucketful. I guess that is no surprise as South Korea has by far the worst attitude towards and treatment of women of any advanced democracy, on any number of measures. I have a friend who married a Korean guy and is currently living there as he does his compulsory military service, and she has been absolutely appalled by the casual misogyny. Hand in hand with this is the emphasis on surface, which is the main reson why South Korea has by far the highest rates of cosmetic surgery of any country in the world. I read an interesting article in the New Yorker recently detailing the cultural roots of this. Modern cosmetic surgery was actually invented by an American army surgeon as a good will gesture to help maimed Korean victims of the Korean war.

I am currently suffering from an ear infection wit consequent vertigo, so that's as far as I can go right now. Time to lie own again.
