It's also compassionate,imo, to prevent later term abortions. Women often feel considerable guilt after an abortion, and then go through it again when they later marry and have their first child and see that that little blob of a fetus actually turns into a human being. For such a person, I think the guilt of realizing they put to death a fully formed tiny baby would be horrific, even life changing.
Perhaps more importantly is the fact that adoptions are open now. There is such a scarcity of infants available for adoption that adoptive parents are willing to 'share' that child with the birth parents. The birth parents can expect to be allowed to visit and/or kept up to date with their child's life through pictures, emails, etc. At some time decided upon by all, the child will be introduced to it's birth parents.
I have a daughter with three adopted children who lives in Salt Lake City. When I arrived for my Christmas visit this year, the birth father of my daughter's 11 year old son was perched on a ladder installing canned lights over the kitchen sink. When he finished, he and my son-in-law along with the boy they 'share' went off for an afternoon of skiing. Two days later, the natural grandmother of one of my daughters adopted girls came by for lunch. It's a different world now. Gone are the days when a women had her newborn infant ripped from her arms and sent off into an information black hole.
Abortion clinics should make it a priority to explain in detail how a young girl can turn her unwanted pregnancy into a win-win for a whole lot of people, including herself. |
