Hmmm, Holly, I seem to remember my mother using nicotine gum to quit smoking, and I know that was before 1984. Perhaps my memory is faulty. On the other hand, I tend to smoke during times of terrible stress, and I smoked also very briefly about eight years ago, when I was working sixty hours a week and my marriage was not going very smoothly, either, so perhaps that is when I tried the gum.

I still maintain that from a behavioral viewpoint, a drug that is coursing through your system, providing nicotine and calming you down every minute is more effective than a gum you have to CHOOSE to chew, instead of smoking a cigarette when you become agitated. The beginning stages of smoking cesssation are very tough indeed. To coin a cliche, I have quit hundreds of times!!!!!!! < : )
