Actually, the 5 represents 500 shares. Means the bid or offer is
good for that amount. Not a good indicator because the person
bidding or asking only has to be good for 100 and not the 500
they are indicating. If 10 market makers are all looking for
500 apiece on the bid, still only 5x5 would show. The largest
amount bid or asked is shown regardless of how many may be at
that price. Now if a bid of 100x5 was showing, this would be bullish
as someone is looking for size. (10,00 shares) And vice versa of
course on the ask side. Hope this helps.
