Have you witnessed the depression some women suffer through that surfaces later in life from having an abortion ?

I have not personally witnessed that, but I would not be surprised if it sometimes happens. I would think it most likely where a woman who wants children eventually finds she can no longer have them. The lost opportunity cost there is fierce.

But, have you witnessed the depression some women suffer as a result of bad relationships or jackass bosses or unwanted children? Or car accidents or body image or credit cards or smoking? There's nothing special about post-abortion depression. We aren't so much of a nanny state that we stop people from engaging in things that they might regret to the point of depression. For the most part, we try for an informed populace.

Morality and decision making are not the only topics wrt abortion.

I would add public policy to the list, but that rarely comes up.

I see morality at the root of the disagreement and the focus of discussion. As I mentioned in an earlier post (not to you), I see abortion as primarily about two of the six foundations of morality--care/harm and sanctity. You touched on care/harm when you mentioned depression. Depression is one of many potential harms. I think anyone who approaches either an abortion or proposing legislation wrt abortion needs to carefully consider the harm on both sides. For it is harm. Anytime a woman finds herself unwillingly pregnant, there's no perfect solution. There is potential harm either way. The most moral thing to do would be, IMO, to weight the harms and prefer the least harm option.

Do you find the use of public funds worthy of discussion ?

You're talking about the Hyde Amendment, I assume. That's a fit subject for discussion. That treatment is unique to abortion. People who are equally opposed to capital punishment or war or whatever still have to suffer their tax money being used for those things. Abortion is the only issue for which we make allowance. Is that warranted? Not on principle. But one might rationalize it as a reasonable price to pay to keep the peace.

Have you viewed ultra sounds of a fetus from early stages of development ?

I've seen some in passing.

Your views re epicure and bentway do not match mine.

I'm happy with any poster who makes articulate arguments. I usually avoid posters who deal in slogans and slurs and other slop. Anyone with whom I can have a real discussion is a treat.
