Well, they only make 1400 a year. So a full robotic assembly line is out of the question.

But it does show that a mix of hand labor and robotics can produce a reasonably priced vehicle in low volumes. They run about $56k-$72k despite having a very large amount of carbon fiber in it and an awful lot of hand labor. That is more than, say a Camry, but well south of a Lamborghini or Ferrari.

Maybe it is time for a new round of small, custom coachwork companies. Have someone like Tesla build a "skateboard" with the batteries, motors, wheels and such and the coachwork companies build the bodies and fit out the interior like Alfa does with the 4C. With laser cutters, 3d printers and such, it could be done on a small volume basis profitably.
