1/6/2017 Contest update
Wow! 2017 is a prime example of the power of prime!
In 2016, for first week of trading the Contest median was down -13.01% YTD, the Nasdaq Biotech Index (NBI) was down -10.74% YTD and the smaller-cap S&P Biotechnology Select Industry Index (SPSIBI) was down -13.90%. Plus, every single portfolio of the 58 in the 2016 Contest showed a loss!
However, as our planet spun into this wonderful prime number year, the Number Gods found favor with Biotech Nation. At the close of 2017’s first week of trading the Contest median was up 6.48% YTD, the Nasdaq Biotech Index (NBI) was up 5.69% YTD and the smaller-cap S&P Biotechnology Select Industry Index (SPSIBI) was up 7.11% YTD. The Nasdaq Composite Index (NCI) closed up 2.56% YTD.
The Week One trophy, goes to TUCK’s portfolio! It took first place with a striking gain of 11.58%. Equally impressive, in second place, is HRS’s portfolio, up 11.37% and a smidgen behind in third place, is ECCO’s portfolio, up 11.32% .
At Friday's close, 44 of the 48 Contest portfolios were in the green, with 31 beating the NBI and 16 beating the SPSIBI. But, if not for the ITEK tumble, all 48 portfolios would be in the green.
The 195 Contest stock picks have an average YTD gain of 5.67% and a median YTD gain of 5.54%.
Below is the Top Ten list. Also below are the Top 5 & Bottom 5 Stocks for the week ranked by % Gained and % Lost YTD. (Prices not converted to US$ in these Tables.)
Portfolio adjustments: ABTU.L did a 1-30 reverse split.
(All corrections, especially adjustments for splits, greatly appreciated.)
Enjoy the penultimate pre-Trump weekend biotechies!
Peace & good health,
Bulba
