<<Maybe it is time for a new round of small, custom coachwork companies.>>

I agree with you 100% on this. And I think the timing is right for something similar to take place in other industries. Without going into details, I can see a place in this country for the revival of mid to high end furniture making, for example. Sometimes the incremental labor costs of adding a little more detail and better finish to a product is not as great as one might assume.

Even though a high end product may require more expensive labor to get the desired quality in the product, the high end price such quality commands can offset those costs greatly. One of my daughters lives in NYC and owns a small, artisan style business and pays up for NYC labor. She could double what she pays for labor and it might only raise the prices of her products by 10% on average. On some of the products as little as 5% I would guess.

She had custom furniture pieces made for display purposes for prices that shocked the heck out of me. And it all comes apart with hidden screws so as to be easily transported in vans. And hand made custom chandeliers...wow. All the attention is focused on labor costs in America. It may be the time is right for taking a different look. Labor costs are raising overseas so the gap of 20 years ago is lessening. I'm hopeful, at any rate, for good things to arise in this country organically.
