Way back in my school days, when fruit juice cocktails were a rarity, some of my friends thought to tease me about my taste buds and poured me a glass of juice and asked me to guess what fruit it is. I identified all 5 ingredients to their surprise. When they asked me how I could taste all those things, I had to admit to them that I simply could not taste all of them, but I could smell them while it was in my mouth.

There are down sides to having a super nose. I can smell a smoker from several paces away, even if they have not been smoking in the past 10 minutes. The scent can be overpowering, which is specially a problem when I have to share an elevator with people coming from their smoke breaks. I once dated a smoker who promised she'd quit. I could tell from the smell if she had been smoking or merely standing near her smoking friends having a conversation. I can smell BO in the subway :( And believe me, ignorance is a bliss. This is more of a problem when I walk strange neighborhoods or have to eat in busy restaurants. When I was in San Francisco on business, the amount of drugs I could smell while walking to my hotel was off the charts. I could almost get high on it. Just the same, I would not want to lose the sense or have it weakened.
