Autonomous vehicles are improving quickly but this technology has no regard for the type of fuel used to power the vehicle. Your posting is very confused on this point.

Even Donald Trump who has said he wants electrical utilities to switch from low-cost natural gas to the far more costly coal as a fuel hasn't suggested that automakers build coal-burning cars. The natural gas industry which provides the lowest cost fuel in America will fight Trump tooth and nail on this point. Trump's proposed government coal mandate is idiotic and far too costly. It would also cost many jobs in the oil and gas industry, especially among smaller gas producers.

As for autonomous vehicles, Google / Alphabet's now independent company Waymo has already reduced the cost of the LIDAR sensor from $75k to $7,500 placing them in the lead.

No one has the level of 3D road mapping Alphabet has already acquired.
