GMR isn't viable due to current costs until the areal densities get a little higher than they are today. Need to be around 3Gb/in^2 is the estimates(approx 4GB/platter is the crossover point) I don't think you'll see these until around early 1999. Until then MR will rule.

Most don't really view the GMR announcement from IBM as all that threatening right now IMO.
