** Companies reliant on personal-computer sales selling off after Gartner reported global shipments fell in 2016 for the fifth straight year

** Global PC shipments fell 3.7 pct in Q4 and were down 6.2 pct for 2016, market research firm Gartner said lateon Wednesday

** Holiday sales were weak, and technology improvements like 2-in-1 form factors and "thin and light" notebooks have not been enough to drive growth, writes Garner analyst Mikako Kitagawa

** Chipmakers Intel down 1.1 pct, Advanced Micro down 5 pct, Nvidia down 2.3 pct, Micron Technology down 3 pct; those losses contributing to 1.5 pct decline in Philadelphia Semiconductor Index

** Hard drive makers also caught up in selloff: Western Digital, down 2.8 pct, and Seagate, down 2.5 pct

** No 2 PC seller HP Inc falling 2.2 pct REUTERS
