When I spoke to RDRT about a month ago they indicated that they have done a lot of GMR R & D which is evidenced by their 1996 paper. At this time it is not economical and will not be deployed until the economics work. If you think of the fact that the demand is for the 2.1 to 10 Gb drives with their present customer base and they don't supply the large enterprise business their position is sound as to why they are not moving to GMR as of yet. When I asked them whether there was a risk of falling too far behind IBM they said that they were not far behind IBM as they were projecting a transition to 2.8 GB per platter verses IBM at 3.1 by the first quarter of this year. I read a recent article which indicated Maxtor was trialing RDRT 2.8 Gb heads. They said that their economic base was very competitive with IBM today and would continue to be so and their real competition was from Asia as indicated in their latest filing/cc.
