I know what you mean. I studied Japanese with a private teacher for around 10 years. Now as for the characters, while in Chinese you need to know aro 5,000 (out of aro 40k) to read a newspaper, Japanese isn't that bad, since at least officially, they only use aro 1,900 of the 'Kanji' stolen from the Chinese.

To add complications to that, however, while each character in Mandarin has one meaning and pronunciation only, in Japanese the pronunciation and use depends on the context, with the 'ON' s sounding close to Chinese and the 'KUN' being the Japanese words depicted by the Chinese meaning of the Kanji.

The use of the phonetic Hiragana and Katakana makes the initial studies of Japanese much easier, for foreigners - as for kids learning how to write:)

Yes, I studied several languages and do anything from OK to perfect in a couple of them.
