>> Well, all of that said, do you expect (traces of) life of some kind to be discovered on Mars?

I at least expect some of the life precursors to be found; amino acids, sugars, bases used by RNA.

>> amazingly if not in some cases identical to what we know from Earth.

I am less confident in that. DNA is a very sophisticated structure requiring a lot of support. RNA based life could be simpler.

>> how would that chocking piece of information be received?

A bit of excitement perhaps, but not much else. The Theology people would adjust their message again as science continues to shine light upon their domain. The ID people would still claim that whatever is found on mars is more proof of some intelligent designer. And the science crowd (of which I am a part of) will still not have any proof or recipe for how all this was created from nothing.

>> Time will tell - soon.

I am not aware of any fossil finding mars missions. But the ExoMars TGO project is underway and hopefully produce useful results in 2018.
