A psychologist friend, who headed-up the government mental health part of the state of Florida before retirement, recommended a book titled "The Authoritarians" - smile.amazon.com It's the research of Dr. Robert Altemeyer, whose professional career has focused on the study of the Authoritarian Personality, and development of the Right-Wing Authoritarian (RWA) personality and ideological variable widely studied in political, social, and personality psychology. Since it's $85 to buy the book version I asked if he could summarize the book in several sentences. His reply: The book is a summary of 40 years of research. Hard to summarize in 3 sentences, but: 1.) There are measurable defects in the structure of their thinking. 2.) It does not conform to the rules of logic as we know them. 3.) You cannot present arguments to them and expect them draw the same conclusions that you would... 4.) You cannot expect them to draw the same conclusions when presented the same arguments a second time. Interesting I'd like to see signal processing aka machine learning applied to try to simulate the same thinking and conclusions, to see what the AI program identifies as the key signals which are predictive. I guess I'm saying I think statistics could isolate the determining factor given enough signal/data - language use, current news and visuals. AI is just a slightly more automated process of the types we used to make sense of seismic sections looking for oil and gas - eliminating noise and enhancing signal recognition.
