"What is the unemployment rate?" employment is higher because many people lost their full-time jobs and had to take two lower paying part-time jobs in order to try to scrape by. "Don't tell me about the participation rate - most of the non-participants are retired folks." I didn't tell you about the labor participation rate, but i'll tell you that your assumption is false because most people of retirement age are still working these days because they can no longer afford to retire. They're doing things like greeting people at walmart. That's how bad the economy is.
