Guns.....I agree, a gun is necessary.
When folks get hungry they will be dangerous. It would be very difficult to protect your family/property without some type of force.
I lived in a country that didn't have a strong police force, and was only located in towns, and everyone was left up to their own defense outside of the towns.
Most people were very poor, $700 a year was the average income, I lived in , " de bush" , and for those of us that were "wealthier" and had "things", we were sitting ducks and targeted constantly. I had a shotgun and everyone knew I did, but for others that didn't have a weapon, they were robbed, beaten, and threaten many times. I even had to use "noise alerts", tin cans with stones in them strung around the perimeter of my AO for a first line of defense.
It's best to be able to hide, no loud generators, no visible gardens, and a hidden "avenue of approach". I finally left that country because it was hard to stay alert all the time. You would actually need about 10 people to provide 24 hours protection. Staying alert 24 hours a day is draining on everyone, and no relief.....R&R.
Don't depend on law and order, those folks have to protect their own too.
