it's the way and when to buy IMO . . pays off year after year . . my observation and experience . . approximately 20% to 30% make 70% to big triple digit gains . . . 30% to 40% put up 30% to 70% gains . . the rest produce smaller gains or small losses . . if using margin the wins are much bigger . . the losses don't change much . . the character of the action forces one out quickly . . if the market and choice are bought at the right time they go higher . . when they don't, the idea or the time for it isn't right . . last year was another one with some big winners . . some strong gainers . . . some decent winners or small wins/losses . . in a portfolio with limited positions like I like there's five to ten ideal buying opportunities a year . . the biggest majority of top performers are the newest best stories . . an idea that profits by 30% produces a profit of 15% for the port . . an idea that profits by 100% produces a profit of 50% for the port . . an idea that profits by 200% doubles the size of the portfolio . . a 10% loss at worse hits the port for 5% . . like the odds for sure! I head into every year knowing they'll be more than a few new big ideas that can be bought when the odds for big gains are at their best . . looking forward to the best new stories and the ideal set-ups in 2017 . . they've paid of year after year . . unless there's a Black Swan event of huge magnitude, 2017 will be another year of profits and hopefully good health . . . my thoughts for what they are worth . .
