for the young 'uns, probably the only way left on God's green earth to beat inflation over the long haul.

Really?? What's the probability you assign that that's the only way left to beat inflation?
==============================
What is the inflation number? (Government keeps changing definition of what's included/excluded)

What's "the long-haul"? USA average inflation rate is under 4% for past 20 years.

If someone were to compare their performance with inflation, they'd want to use a comparison number -- I'd guess the USA published inflation rate, ignoring the controvery of what the make-up is. And for a long haul -if you want to beat inflation for twenty years, +4% seems a good enough start based on recent past history.

The S&P 500 Index is up 7% per year on average for the past 10 years, The Dow Jones Total Stock Market Index is up 7% per year for the past 10 years, the Russell 1000 Value Index has averaged 5.7% over the past 10 years.

If life keeps going on as it has, I don't see why a decent index fund or several of them won't continue to handily beat inflation.
