Re: A fab in China means one less fab somewhere else.

GM,

This is a dangerous assumption to make, don't you think? With India & China comprising ~2.5B of the 5.5B people on earth and consuming a small fraction of what is currently consumed in the west, is it not a safe assumption that Fabs will have to be built to satiate this demand? Reminds me of the line from Casablanca: "maybe not next year or the year after, but someday and for the rest of your life." The demand will be there at some point in the next decade. Thought must be given to the penetration of IC's in everything around us. Things that we take for granted(i.e. wristwatch, calculator) are things not used by the masses in these countries. Once the trend begins of consumption of these types of products takes force, it will be irrevocable and have the effect of creating a buying audience who wants more and more and more.... Akin to the U.S. now w/ computers. people I know who have purchased Pentium Pro 200's are already looking toward their next faster system. Our cycle is in full swing. Their's has yet to begin....
