Here is a small piece on Sony, bit of a sidebar.

CHICAGO (Reuters) - NextLevel Systems and Sony said today they plan to form a strategic alliance, subject to definitive agreements, to jointly develop digital TV technologies.

When definitive agreements are reached Sony will purchase 7. 5 million new shares of NextLevel common stock or about five percent of the current outstanding shares at $25.00 per share.

Today's Wall Street Journal quoted a Sony Electronics spokesman based in Park Ridge, N.J., as saying, "We are forming this alliance to develop digital TV technologies."

Sony beat competition from Thomson Consumer Electronics, a Thomson unit, in the deal, which is subject to a definitive agreement.

The new set-top boxes, which probably would not hit the market for two years or so, would have far more memory and computer power than current models.
