Eric, Aluminium will passivate with water and oxygen, and if the strata are not disturbed and anaerobic they can endure. Clay beds witht the pyrite keeping it anaerobic would allow them to endure.
Did they ever get an age?. It has to be a recently subducted material that broke out while reduced. Curious that Al, a highly reactive metal was formed. Do you think it was an alien spacecraft weathered down?
