"most of these men and woman do not take pleasure in the fact that they needed to use lethal force"

I don't think any sane moral person does. That said,

When a bad guy holds another hostage, conveying a threat to the well being or life of the hostage as a matter of leverage. The police sniper's mindset when they pull the trigger. Is not done to kill the aggressor. But rather the action is to save the innocent hostage.

So to is it in war. Military personal when engaged in battle, like the police must always maintain the mindset. The lethal force administered is done on a basis of professional decision. NOT a personal one. Failing to understand and connect and adhere to that principal mindset opens a path to PTSD.

Police forces in my opinion take greater steps to precondition the mind space of their officers to mentally handle such occurrences, than the armed services. Police are drilled on using as much force as necessary to take control. Their training is not to kill but to stop the objective who does not respond to direction.
